Thursday–Sunday, 17–20 Sep 2015
OK, some left on Wednesday and Randy extended the ride beyond Sunday. I’m using the “offical dates” just because.
Randy says…
A bear ran across about 20 feet in front of me in Sequoia NP. I never know whether to think that’s ‘it’ for awhile or eventually it will be more serious.
So kind of a 3 part trip for me-all good but with variations. Left Buckeye to the northwest thru the park but into the foothills and around the fire area. Saw some big plumes of smoke in distance and roads were quiet as they hadn’t been open long and main Kings Canyon highway was still closed. Went thru parched and hot areas…would be great in spring or early summer… like Wonder Valley and Pine Flat Reservoir. Reservoir must have been nearly 300 feet down from full. Area was really quiet with a few small boats waaaaay down there. Headed over to Prather for a much appreciated taco/chile rellano lunch. Then up the big long hill to Shaver Lake. Up that one hill and you go from foothills to alpine. Shaver Lake was a very pleasant small Sierra town-one gas station and one motel and that’s about all I needed. Guy at motel told me all kinds of local info, mostly about how all the lakes around there are Southern California Edison electrical producers, connected by tunnels and were the main early suppliers of power to LA way back in early days.
So next couple days explored quite a few excellent narrow paved and unpaved roads, stopped a neat old Forest Service Ranger Station, saw lakes that would be even more awesome if they had more water, froze butt camping at 8200 feet elevation, had buffalo burrito at Mono Hot Springs Resort, rode (partly) on some knarly 4WD roads that guys were trailering rock crawlers to. Bottomed out once but think it was just the centerstand. Was mostly quiet up there but people there were quad and 4 wheelers and people really trying to get ‘out there’.
