It still doesn’t look like Death Valley.
The days plan called for breakfast in camp then a leisurely ride to the Eel River Brewery for lunch. We left about 10 AM. The route was Mattole road past Honneydew and Petrolia then on through the lost coast and Ferndale on the way to Fortuna. The distance was maybe 100 miles. Road conditions were rough. Very rough with short stretch of new pavement followed immediately by patches of dirt and gravel. Good thing we weren’t in a hurry. Tom remarked that if the patched road was this bad imagine how much worse it must have been. The three of us on a GS with long suspensions just smiled.
After a great lunch we stopped at a local Safeway to get supplies (beer) before heading back to camp. Yes, Tom does know many people in this part of the state… one of his old high school friends recognized him in the Safeway.
We hopped on 101 for the 20 miles or so back to camp, arriving back in the campground about 3:30. Fred and Hao were rumored to be heading up the coast. Several text/phone messages later we found out they were moteling it this visit. They’d meet us at the camp site Sunday morning to join us for breakfast and at least part of the ride home.
