After breakfast at a new restaurant in Morgan Hill (it replaces Just Breakfast) Dan and Jerry planned to return via Uvas road. Carl and I headed over Hecker Pass. On the other side of the pass I left Carl at Mt Madona Rd. I took Hazel Dell, and Browns Valley Rd into Corralitos. There I ignored the “Road Blocked 11/7/2007” signs and took Eureka Canyon Rd, anyway. Last time I took this route the sign said “Road Closed” but I found it to be passible. About 12 miles later Eureka Canyon had become Highland way and I found this…
Road Closed
The road on the other side
They’re not kidding, this time. The barrier and mound of dirt wasn’t there last time. I might have been able to squeeze around the barrier if I took my bags off, but last nights rain made that mound very soft. Plus, once walking around the barrier I found another barrier and mound of dirt about 100 yards up the road.
The next images show the roadway erosion that was the cause of the initial closure maybe 18 months ago. Apparently the vehicle at the bottom of the gorge is somewhat new. A local said it was pushed over the road after being stolen. The recent road blockage was to stop that from happening again.
Road erosion
Long way down…
…to this vehicle
I rode back to Corralitos then meandered over to Scotts Valley where I got some gas. From there I took back roads that parallel 17 before jumping on the freeway and going home.
